Kakheti: Georgia's Wine Region – Sighnaghi, Telavi and Qvevri Wine

- Kakheti in the east is Georgia's most important wine region; its capital is Telavi.
- Typical is wine from the qvevri, a clay jar buried in the ground – UNESCO cultural heritage.
- Sighnaghi with its town wall and views over the Alazani Valley is the prettiest base.
- Grape harvest (Rtveli): roughly September to mid-October.
- About 2 hours from Tbilisi (guide value) – plan at least 2 nights.
Kakheti is why Georgia is called the cradle of wine. More than half the country's grapes grow here, and many families still make wine in the qvevri – a clay jar in the ground, listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

Sighnaghi, Telavi and around
Sighnaghi has cobbled lanes, carved balconies and a long town wall with views over the Alazani Valley; Bodbe Monastery is next door. Telavi is Kakheti's capital and was the residence of King Erekle II in the 18th century. Nearby: Tsinandali (historic estate, known for white wines), Alaverdi Monastery (with its own winery) and Kvareli (a cellar in a rock tunnel; the area is known for semi-sweet Kindzmarauli). Small family wineries are often more personal and cheaper than big ones.

Frequently asked questions
What is qvevri wine?
The wine ferments in large clay jars buried in the ground, often with skins and seeds – this is also how amber wine is made. The method is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
Sighnaghi or Telavi as a base?
Sighnaghi is prettier and more romantic; Telavi is more central for wineries such as Tsinandali and Alaverdi Monastery. With two nights you can combine both.
Can I visit Kakheti without a car?
Yes, marshrutkas run to Sighnaghi and Telavi. For rural wineries a tour or driver is more practical – then everyone can taste.
When is the best time?
May to October. The harvest from about September to mid-October is especially atmospheric.
