  • Hiking season: June to September; in winter the Military Road is closed at times at the Jvari Pass.

Kazbegi is Georgia's postcard view: a small church on a green hill, behind it the glaciated Mount Kazbek at over 5,000 metres. The village is officially called Stepantsminda and lies at 1,740 m right on the Georgian Military Road. Here is how to get there, what to see and when to go.

Getting there from Tbilisi

How Price (guide value) Time
Marshrutka from Didube bus station approx. 20 GEL p.p., cash only 3–3.5 hrs
Shared taxi from Didube approx. 25–60 GEL p.p. approx. 3 hrs
Private driver from approx. 210 GEL per car approx. 3 hrs without stops
Rental car see Car rental in Georgia approx. 3 hrs without stops

The route is about 150 km long. You reach Didube bus station by metro (line 1, Didube station). With a driver or rental car, stops along the way are worth it – they turn the drive into an excursion.

Stops on the Military Road

  • Ananuri Fortress: fortified church on the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir.
  • Gudauri viewpoint: lookout with the colourful Friendship Monument above the valley.
  • Jvari Pass (2,395 m): the highest point of the route, avalanche-prone in winter.

Highlights in Kazbegi

Gergeti Trinity Church

The 14th-century church at 2,170 m is Kazbegi's landmark. Two ways lead up:

  • On foot: about 1.5–2.5 hours uphill through the village of Gergeti. The left-hand path through the valley is less steep than the direct trail. For sunrise in summer, set off early with a head torch.
  • 4×4 taxi: about 15 minutes from the main square, according to local guides approx. 70–100 GEL per car or approx. 25 GEL per person.

Admission is free and the church is active: cover shoulders and knees; women wear a headscarf (often available to borrow at the entrance).

Gergeti Glacier

For sure-footed hikers: a long day hike beyond the church up to the glacier below Mount Kazbek. Only in stable weather and in high summer, ideally with a guide.

Juta

A mountain village at around 2,200 m below the jagged Chaukhi peaks, reached by a track from the village of Sno. From there, easy to moderate hikes lead across alpine meadows. In summer 4×4 taxis run from Stepantsminda.

Truso Valley

The valley branches off the Military Road about 17 km south of Stepantsminda: mineral springs, travertine terraces and abandoned fortified villages. On foot or by 4×4, only in the warm season. The valley is close to the boundary with South Ossetia – stay on the usual paths.

Gveleti Waterfall

A short hike (about an hour there and back, estimated) near the Dariali Gorge north of Stepantsminda – good for half a day.

Tips for your visit

  • Overnight: at least one night, better two. Many guesthouses and hotels have views of the church and Mount Kazbek – book early in high season.
  • Cash: there are ATMs in the village, but marshrutkas and some guesthouses only take cash.
  • Clothing: bring a jacket and rain gear even in summer; the weather changes quickly.
  • Border: beyond Kazbegi lies Upper Lars, the official border crossing to Russia. Lorries often queue on the Military Road in front of it – allow extra time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kazbegi worth it as a day trip from Tbilisi?

It is possible but tiring: one way takes about 3 hours without stops. Better plan at least one night – then you see Gergeti Church in the morning light and have time for a hike.

How long is the hike to Gergeti Church?

From the village it takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours uphill depending on fitness, with around 700–900 metres of ascent depending on starting point and path. Going down is faster. Alternatively, 4×4 taxis go up from the main square in about 15 minutes.

When is the best time to visit Kazbegi?

June to September for hiking. May and October are beautiful, but there is often snow at higher altitudes. In winter Kazbegi is snowy; the road over the Jvari Pass is closed at times due to avalanche risk.

Do I need a car in Kazbegi?

Not necessarily. The village can be reached by marshrutka, and you can walk to Gergeti Church. For Juta, Truso and Gveleti Waterfall a driver or 4×4 taxi is practical.
