Best Time to Visit Georgia: When the Trip Is Really Worth It

Updated: GeorgienUrlaub editorial team6 min read
Greater Caucasus in autumn
Key facts at a glance
  • Best time for a round trip: May to June and September to October – pleasantly warm, mountains mostly accessible.
  • High summer (July/August): ideal for the high mountains and the Black Sea, but Tbilisi is often above 30 °C.
  • Grape harvest (Rtveli) in Kakheti: roughly September to mid-October.
  • Winter: skiing in Gudauri and Bakuriani from about late December to mid-April.
  • Tusheti is only reachable in summer (roughly June to late September/early October).

Georgia packs almost everything into a small area: a subtropical Black Sea coast, a dry east, wine country and glaciers in the Greater Caucasus. That is why there is no single best time to visit – it depends on what you want to do. Here is the answer for every type of trip, with climate data for three typical places.

In short: the best time by type of trip

What you plan Best time Why
Round trip (Tbilisi, Kakheti, Kazbegi) May–June, September–October pleasantly warm, mountain roads mostly open
Hiking in the high mountains (Svaneti, Kazbegi) July–September passes and high trails free of snow
Tusheti approx. June–September Abano Pass only passable in summer
Swimming in Batumi June–September sea at 22–26 °C
Wine & grape harvest September–mid-October Rtveli in Kakheti
City break in Tbilisi April–June, September–November no summer heat
Skiing late December–mid-April Gudauri, Bakuriani

Our recommendation for a first trip: late May to mid-June or mid-September to mid-October. Then the city, the wine region and the mountains all work at the same time.

Climate in Georgia: three zones, three kinds of weather

The Caucasus keeps cold air from the north at bay, while the Black Sea brings humid air to the west. That is why the regions differ so much:

  • East (Tbilisi, Kakheti): continental – hot, fairly dry summers, cold winters with little snow.
  • West (Batumi, Kutaisi): humid subtropical – mild winters, lots of rain all year.
  • High mountains (Kazbegi, Svaneti, Tusheti): cool summers, long snowy winters.

Kazbegi = Stepantsminda at 1,740 m. The averages are misleading in summer: Tbilisi often reaches more than 30 °C in July and August.

What the table shows: Tbilisi is wettest in May, but pleasantly warm. Batumi gets the most rain in September and October – despite the warm sea. And in Kazbegi you need a jacket in the evening even in August.

Georgia month by month

Spring (March–May): green, blooming, still snow in the mountains

From April Tbilisi and Kakheti become pleasant, and from May the valleys bloom and everything is lush green. May is also the wettest month in Tbilisi, though – plan buffer days. There is often still snow in the mountains: Kazbegi works for trips to Gergeti Church, but high-altitude tours and Tusheti are still closed.

  • Late April: rafting season starts on the Aragvi.
  • Orthodox Easter: on 2 May in 2027 – a big family celebration, many Georgians are on the move.

Summer (June–August): mountains and sea

June is one of the most beautiful months of all: warm but not yet hot, and the mountains become accessible. July and August are peak season for Svaneti, Kazbegi, Tusheti and the Black Sea coast. Tbilisi and Kakheti are hot then – do your sightseeing in the morning and evening.

  • Hiking: many high trails and passes are only free of snow from July and are good until about mid-September. Check conditions locally.
  • Tusheti: the only road over the Abano Pass is only passable in summer – depending on snow, roughly from late May/June to late September or early October, and only by 4×4. In 2026 there is construction work on the road; check the current status shortly before your trip.
  • Batumi: swimming season with water at 22–26 °C, but also rain and humid air.

Autumn (September–November): grape harvest and golden colours

September and October are the best time to travel for many: the heat is gone, the light is clear, and Kakheti is harvesting grapes. The sea in Batumi is still around 24 °C in September.

  • Rtveli (grape harvest): in Kakheti roughly September to mid-October. There are no fixed dates; many wineries decide at short notice. In western Georgia the harvest is later.
  • Tbilisoba: Tbilisi's city festival, usually on the first weekend of October (3/4 October in 2026).
  • From mid-October: the first snow falls at high altitude and Tusheti closes. In November Tbilisi also turns cool and grey.

Winter (December–February): skiing, cities and few tourists

Tbilisi is cold in winter (highs around 3–4 °C) but rarely deep in snow – good for a quiet city break with a sulphur bath in Abanotubani. In Gudauri and Bakuriani the ski season starts around late December and lasts until mid-April (2025/26 season in Gudauri: 27/28 December to 19 April). Exact dates depend on the snow.

  • Orthodox Christmas: 7 January, with processions (Alilo) in Tbilisi.
  • Roads: the Military Road over the Jvari Pass to Kazbegi is closed at times during snowfall and avalanche risk. Svaneti is reachable, but the mountain road is demanding. In winter it is best not to drive yourself.

High season and low season

  • High season: July and August, plus weekends in September/October. Good accommodation in Kazbegi, Mestia and Sighnaghi is booked early – reserve in good time.
  • Low season: March/April and November. Fewer crowds, but mountains partly inaccessible and some guesthouses closed.
  • Holidays: around Orthodox Easter and New Year many Georgians travel themselves.

What to pack for each season

  • Spring and autumn: layers, rain jacket, sturdy shoes. Mornings and evenings are fresh.
  • Summer: sun protection and a hat for Tbilisi, a warm jacket for the mountains, rain gear for Batumi.
  • Winter: warm clothes, non-slip shoes. For churches: women a headscarf and skirt (often available to borrow), men long trousers.
